What is a "laser shutter" that safely blocks laser light?

1.Introduction

Laser light is widely utilized in factories and research facilities for applications such as laser processing and laser marking. However, due to its high energy, laser light poses risks of causing serious damage to the skin and eyes.

Therefore, to safely operate laser equipment, a "laser shutter" that appropriately blocks laser light is essential.

This column introduces laser shutter products for blocking laser light, discussing their roles, types, and selection points.

2.Why are laser shutters necessary?

Lasers are classified by their danger level into different classes. Especially, lasers classified as "Class 3B" or "Class 4" pose potential harm not only through direct exposure but also through reflected light, necessitating strict safety measures.

Within this context, laser shutters serve the following roles:

  • Preventing unwanted laser light from escaping during laser operation
  • Instantly shutting off the laser in emergency situations to prevent accidents
  • Protecting workers during maintenance or when the device is open

Laser shutters may be integrated as part of laser devices or installed separately as a safety mechanism.

3.Introduction to rotary solenoid-type laser shutters

A rotary solenoid is an actuator that utilizes electromagnetic force to perform reciprocating rotational movements (oscillatory motion) and is also referred to as a rotating solenoid. By attaching a shutter to a rotary solenoid, it is possible to easily create a laser shutter.

When the power supply is activated, the shutter moves to the "ON" position, opening the optical path of the laser beam. When the power is turned off, the shutter returns to the "OFF" position by the force of the return spring, blocking the laser beam. Typically, when no current flows, the shutter remains in the "CLOSE" position, ensuring safety even in emergency situations.

Reference Models: Rotary Solenoid with Return Spring

RSR28/17-SR Bistable Rotary Solenoid RSR28/17-SR | Takano Co.,Ltd.
RSR28/17-SL Bistable Rotary Solenoid RSR28/17-SL | Takano Co.,Ltd.

This model does not include a shutter. By preparing a shutter and attaching it securely to the disc section, it can be used as a laser shutter. We also offer shutter design services, so please feel free to consult with us.

Drive circuit example

It can be driven by toggling ON and OFF using a relay. However, there is conduction polarity, so please check the external diagram to confirm the wire color, polarity, and rotation direction.

We also offer rotary solenoids with dual excitation (bistable rotary solenoids) that can be used as shutter actuators, as well as solenoids with built-in shutters. The dual excitation type is non-energized except during operation, featuring low power consumption and low heat generation. Please select the appropriate model according to your application.

4.Applications example

Industrial laser processing machines:
Shutters for laser cutting machines, laser welding machines, laser drilling equipment, etc., which block laser emission to ensure safety during operation or emergency stops.

Laser markers / laser engraving machines:
Shutters that block laser irradiation in devices used for printing or marking on products, ensuring prevention of erroneous irradiation and safety when no processing object is present or in case of abnormalities.

Optical measurement and analysis instruments:
Shutters used in optical instruments like microscopes, spectrometers, and interferometers to block laser light as needed, protecting equipment, detectors, and ensuring operator safety.

Medical equipment (laser treatment and diagnostic devices):
Shutters designed for laser treatment devices, ophthalmic lasers, dermatological lasers, etc., to protect patients and medical staff from laser leakage.

Research and development / experimental facilities:
Shutters installed in experimental devices using high-power lasers at universities, research institutions, and corporate laboratories, intended for blocking lasers during experiment preparation or in case of abnormalities to ensure safety.

Laser communication / optical fiber communication systems:
Shutters for optical communication systems using high-power lasers that automatically block laser paths during maintenance or fault occurrences to protect equipment and workers.

5.Summary

With the widespread use of laser equipment, the importance of laser-blocking shutters is becoming increasingly significant. Choosing the appropriate shutter for its intended use and ensuring thorough safety measures leads to safe and secure laser operations.
